Gluten-Free Certification Program is initially developed by the Canadian Celiac Association and administered by the Allergen Control Group (ACG). As of July 2013, the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) in the USA has been endorsing the GFCP standard requirements and permitting brand owners to display their NFCA certification trademark on those gluten-free products manufactured in GFCP recognized facilities. This has created the equivalent of a North American GFCP.

It is estimated that three to four million North Americans have Celiac Disease (CD), an autoimmune disorder triggered by any gluten protein. The disease can damage the small intestine, which in turn can lead to further symptoms that may require hospitalization. It naturally follows that those with an allergy or gluten intolerance would demonstrate caution and remain faithful to those products that they know they can trust. It is imperative for gluten-free product manufacturers to be compliant and transparent to satisfy the particular needs of this customer group. A great deal of diligence, effort and care goes into the production of gluten-free products and communicating this commitment to excellence and quality through independent certification fosters consumer confidence.
